BISD teachers win H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards
Three Brownsville Independent School District teachers, two of them longtime educators and one a “rising star,” were honored Wednesday morning as 2018 H-E-B Excellence in Education award winners in surprise celebrations at their schools.
Each received $1,000 for themselves and $1,000 for their school, and were invited to Houston on May 5-6 to compete on a statewide level for larger cash prizes. The H-E-B awards are the largest education awards in Texas, with monetary awards this year totaling $430,000.
Graciela Guzman, who teaches English at HannaEarlyCollegeHigh School and started with BISD fresh out of the University of Texas at Brownsville 23 years ago, was honored with H-E-B’s lifetime achievement award for secondary teachers.
Julian Salinas, a physical education teacher at CastañedaElementary School, received the rising star award for elementary school teachers. Salinas started the afterschool gardening program at Castañeda, which has served as a model for other schools in the district.
Luis Leal, a BISD teacher for 27 years who teaches at Keller Elementary but also has taught at the middle school level, received the lifetime achievement award for elementary school teachers.
