Hockey players dressed in Blackhawks bowling shirts walked a red carpet Monday night inside Lucky Strike.
Every player, save for injured goalie Corey Crawford, showed up to try to knock down pins and raise money for the Inner-City Education Program as part of Brent Seabrook’s annual Celebrity ICE Bowl.
Fans bowled with Blackhawks and competed against them in bubble hockey and pool tournaments.
ICE began in 2003 to assist low-income children get educational and hockey opportunities that wouldn’t have otherwise been at their disposal. The program has awarded more than $400,000 in academic scholarships since it started. ICE offers scholarships to area students, grade school to college undergrad, and has a mandatory academic tutoring and a mentor program.
Seabrook has been involved with ICE for 10 years.
“I can’t believe it has been 10 years,” he said. “Just learning about the stuff we’ve done, 30 kids under scholarship, the hockey program when it started — it’s pretty cool to be a part of something like this.”
Hi, Highmore: It took Matthew Highmore six games to score his first NHL goal after he was called up from Rockford.
But the rookie forward said he won’t remember much about the shot that gave the Hawks a brief 4-3 lead Saturday during the second period of a 7-4 loss at Boston.
“I think I kind of blacked out, honestly,” Highmore said. “Yeah, big goal in the game. I guess it kind of just happened.”
Hi, praise: Defenseman Erik Gustafsson has a goal and four assists in his last two games, which has been enough to catch Seabfrook’s attention.
“He has been a jolt, providing some offense and points and doing a good job in the back end as well,” Seabrook said. “It has been good to see his progression.”
One-timers: Jonathan Toews has three goals and six assists in his last six games. … Goalie Anton Forsberg has allowed one or fewer goals in six of his starts this season. He has allowed four or more goals in the same number.
