Canisius revamps deaf education graduate program

Canisius College is bringing back its deaf education program for fall 2018 with a revised curriculum.

The two-year graduate program was suspended for fall 2017 due to low enrollment and the need to re-evaluate the curriculum. College officials submitted a revised curriculum to the state Education Department that was recently approved.

The new curriculum reduces from 58 to 46 the number of credit hours required for a master’s degree in deaf education, which should make the program more affordable. The college collaborates with St. Mary’s School for the Deaf nearby on Main Street, and students in the graduate program can choose to live at St. Mary’s during the program.

The Canisius program is one of just 48 nationwide, and it has a job placement rate of 100 percent.
