CLEVELAND, Ohio — McDonald’s is the latest company investing millions in its employees thanks to savings from the Trump tax cuts.
The fast-food giant announced commitment of $150 million over five years towards Archways to Opportunity. The program gives employees access to a variety of free educational services as well as high schol and college tuition assistance.
“Our commitment to education reinforces our ongoing support of the people who play a crucial role in our journey to build a better McDonald’s,” Steve Easterbrook, McDonald’s President and CEO, said in a statement. “By offering restaurant employees more opportunities to further their education and pursue their career aspirations, we are helping them find their full potential, whether that’s at McDonald’s or elsewhere.”
Nationwide, Archways to Opportunity has helped 24,000 people better their education and awarded over $21 million in tuition assistance since launching in 2015. In the Ohio region, the program has benefitted more 600 employees, an investment of over $700,000
In addition to tripling its investment in the program, McDonald’s is lowering the eligibility requirement from nine months of employment to 90 days. The company is also extending some of the available services to employees’ families.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for people looking for jobs this summer in Northeast Ohio,” said John Blickle, whose family runs 26 McDonald’s restaurants in the area. “If they get hired at a McDonald’s restaurant in May, they can be eligible for these education benefits by the time they go back to school in August or September.”
More than 50 of Blickle’s employees have received tuition assistance. Three have even earned their high school diploma through the program.
McDonald’s joins a list of companies that includes Disney, Walmart, AT&T and others directing money from the tax cuts back to employees in some form.
