The U.S. Department of Education has given feedback on North Dakota’s plan to comply with a new federal education law, known as the Every Student Succeeds Act.

State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler said she spoke Monday with Education Department officials via a telephone conference call, one which she called “positive, substantive and cordial.”

Education Department officials have requested additional information on several parts of the state’s plan, and the department’s evaluation of the plan and notes from the expert peer reviewers who examined it will be made public this week, according to Baesler.

The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction will meet with a statewide ESSA planning committee on Monday to provide an overview of the feedback and gather members’ responses to the changes, Baesler said. DPI is required to submit a response to the Education Department by Aug. 21.

North Dakota is one of 19 states and the District of Columbia that have submitted their ESSA state plans, with more states planning to do so next month. ESSA replaced No Child Left Behind in 2015. The new law diminishes the federal government’s role in education and bolsters the state’s involvement.

“We look forward to continuing our good working relationship with the Department of Education as this process goes forward,” Baesler said. “All of us are keeping in mind that the purpose of this process is to improve the education of our students and to make our education system more accountable to the students, parents and taxpayers that it serves.”
