Portland Association of Teachers President Suzanne Cohen urged educators to take action in light of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida in a speech at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
For Cohen, the issue was personal. She’s a graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
“These students went to the same high school I went to, but their experience is very different than mine,” Cohen said. “They are part of the mass shooting generation.”
Cohen detailed how active shooter drills weren’t the norm when she was in school.
“We didn’t speak out when these practices become normal, but we have to speak out now,” she said. “I am past the point of debating whether or not gun violence is an education issue. It is.”
