Report: GOP Senate leaders feuded over massive education bill

TALLAHASSEE — A massive education law that has inspired lawsuits from school districts and derision from teachers’ unions nearly fell victim to an intraparty feud in the Republican-led state Senate, the website Politico is reporting today.

The back and forth was detailed in a series of text messages exchanged by legislators and their staff during the hectic final days of the 2017 legislative session. The texts were obtained by Politico through a public records request.

The Senate’s top brass weathered resistance from powerful members within their own party, including Sen. David Simmons, R-Altamonte Springs, as they propelled the controversial House bill through the traditionally moderate upper chamber.

The messages show that Simmons, chair of the Senate education committee, attempted to rewrite the measure in the waning days of the session.
